Beheneth-25

Pharcos BA 25

Also known as: PEG-25 Behenyl Ether | Polyoxyethylene 25 Behenyl Ether

Pharcos BA 25 is a highly hydrophilic (ethoxylated with 25 moles of EO) surfactant featuring a long C22 behenyl tail. This extreme molecular imbalance provides exceptional structuring and solubilizing properties. It is the core ingredient required to formulate modern, crystal-clear hair pomades and stiff edge-control gels, while also serving as a crucial matrix builder in solid stick antiperspirants.

Mechanism

How It Works

  • With a high HLB (~16.0) combined with a massive C22 alkyl chain, Beheneth-25 operates via high-density micellar packing.

  • When dissolved in an aqueous system across a threshold concentration (usually >15%), the very long hydrophobic tails aggregate tightly, while the extended PEG chains force massive hydration spheres. Because the C22 tails crystallize heavily, the resulting spherical micelles are exceptionally rigid. They pack against each other so tightly that they completely immobilize the water phase, forming an optically transparent, solid-like 'ringing gel'. Unlike polymeric carbomer gels, these micellar gels break down instantly under shear (rubbing into the hands) and re-form immediately, providing unique, workable hold for hair styling.

Common questions about Beheneth-25

Does Beheneth-25 provide hold in hair products?

Yes, while technically an emulsifier, the rigid micellar structure it forms leaves a thin, stiff film on the hair shaft as the water evaporates, providing significant styling hold without the flaking associated with standard polymer resins.

Can I use Ceteareth-25 instead?

They are functionally similar, but Beheneth-25 (C22) typically produces a slightly firmer, more temperature-stable gel than Ceteareth-25 (C16/C18 blend) due to stronger crystallization of its longer carbon tail.
