Ceteareth-30

Pharcos C 30

Also known as: PEG-30 Cetostearyl Ether | Polyoxyethylene 30 Cetostearyl Ether

Pharcos C 30 is a very high HLB (~16.5) non-ionic surfactant. While it finds some use in personal care for stabilizing extremely polar systems, its true value is industrial. It acts as an elite dispersion stabilizer for suspension concentrates (SC) in agrochemical pesticides, and plays a vital role in preventing pre-coagulation in synthetic latex polymerizations for paints and high-performance glues.

Mechanism

How It Works

  • By possessing 30 moles of ethylene oxide, the hydrophilic PEG chain is extraordinarily long.

  • In agrochemical Suspended Concentrates (where insoluble pesticide powder is suspended in water), C-30 acts as a highly effective steric dispersant. The hydrophobic tail bonds strongly to the crystalline surface of the pesticide particle. Meanwhile, the massive PEG-30 chain extends far out into the water layer. If two pesticide particles collide, these dense, highly hydrated PEG chains physically bounce off each other (steric repulsion). This completely prevents the pesticide powder from agglomerating, falling out of suspension, or forming a concrete-like sediment at the bottom of the bottle during years of storage.

Common questions about Ceteareth-30

Why is C-30 used in pesticides over standard C-20?

The longer the PEG chain, the greater the steric 'bumper' surrounding the particle. C-30 provides significantly more potent repulsion against particle agglomeration, which is critical when suspending heavy, dense pesticide powders.

Does it impact the foam profile of the paint?

Because it is so heavily ethoxylated, it is a very poor foamer. It disperses the latex and pigments beautifully without causing the aggressive bubbling usually caused by anionic surfactants.
