Ceteareth-80

Pharcos C 80

Also known as: PEG-80 Cetostearyl Ether | Polyoxyethylene 80 Cetostearyl Ether

Pharcos C 80 represents the extreme upper end of the ethoxylation spectrum for this series. Possessing a massive HLB (>18.0), it is fundamentally used to force intensely hydrophobic materials—such as complex hair dyes, industrial epoxy resins, and thick agrochemical actives—into stable, aqueous solutions and microemulsions.

Mechanism

How It Works

  • At 80 moles of ethylene oxide, the molecule acts more like a massive water-soluble polymer than a traditional surfactant.

  • In oxidative hair dye systems (like permanent colors), C-80 acts as an exceptional 'leveling agent'. It forms massive, highly polar micelles around the unreacted dye precursors in the cream. When applied to the hair, it strictly regulates the speed at which the dye precursors exit the micelle and penetrate the hair shaft. This governed release prevents the dye from grabbing onto the porous ends of the hair too quickly, ensuring a perfectly even, level color result from root to tip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical Information

Common questions about Ceteareth-80

Why use C-80 instead of Polysorbates for solubilizing?

Polysorbates are ester-based and prone to hydrolysis in extreme pH environments (like the highly alkaline ammonia environment of a hair dye). Ceteareth-80 is an ether linkage, rendering it entirely bulletproof against extreme acid or base degradation.

Is it completely water soluble?

Yes, despite being derived from fatty alcohols, the massive PEG-80 chain renders the flake completely, instantly, and clearly soluble in room temperature water.
