PEG-9 Lauryl Ether
Pharcos L 9
Also known as: Polidocanol | Macrogol Lauryl Ether 9 | Polyoxyethylene 9 Lauryl Ether
Pharcos L 9 (HLB ~13.5) boasts very strong detergency and solubilization power. While it is highly effective in industrial hard-surface cleaners for suspending heavy particulate soils, it is uniquely famous in the dermatological field. Under its pharmaceutical name (Polidocanol), it acts as a mild local anesthetic and anti-pruritic, heavily formulated into anti-itch creams, eczema lotions, and even injected for treating varicose veins (sclerotherapy).

How It Works
Detergency: The extra ethoxylation (9 moles) makes the micelle significantly more hydrophilic than L-7. While slightly slower to wet out a surface, L-9 possesses vastly superior 'soil suspension' power. Once it pulls dirt off a surface, the massive water-barrier surrounding the micelle fiercely prevents the dirt from re-depositing onto the cleaned article.
Topical Anesthesia (Polidocanol): When applied to the skin in eczema creams (typically 2-4%), the specific molecular geometry of the Laureth-9 molecule reversibly blocks the voltage-gated sodium channels in cutaneous sensory nerve endings. This numbs the local area, halting the transmission of the 'itch' signal to the brain and breaking the scratch-itch cycle for patients with atopic dermatitis.
Technical Information
Common questions about PEG-9 Lauryl Ether
Pharcos L 9 is supplied as a high-purity cosmetic and industrial surfactant. While it is chemically identical to Polidocanol, formulation as a true API for injection (sclerotherapy) requires specific pharma-grade regulatory certifications.
