PEG-4 Rapeseedamide
Pharcos PEG 4 RA
Also known as: Rapeseed Oil PEG-4-amide | Amides, rape-oil, N-(hydroxyethyl), ethoxylated (4 mol EO)
Pharcos PEG 4 RA is a unique non-ionic surfactant synthesized by ethoxylating amides derived directly from rapeseed oil. In modern cosmetic chemistry, it is primarily used as a high-performance alternative to traditional alkanolamides (like CDEA or CMEA). It is fundamentally incapable of forming carcinogenic nitrosamines, making it a critical safety choice for global brands. Furthermore, it boasts vastly superior low-temperature thickening power compared to CDEA in both sulfate-based and amino-acid-based body washes.

How It Works
Thickening occurs via synergistic micellar entanglement.
When added to an anionic surfactant system (like SLES or Sarcosinates), the long C22-rich fatty chains of the rapeseed oil plunge deeply into the anionic micelles. The 4-mole PEG bridge, combined with the amide headgroup, drastically swells the size of these micelles, forcing them into highly entangled rod-like structures. This rapidly builds bulk viscosity. Because the C22 carbon chain is significantly longer than the C12 lauric chain found in CDEA, PEG-4 RA provides equivalent or superior thickening power at much lower usage concentrations.
Technical Information
Common questions about PEG-4 Rapeseedamide
Cocamide DEA contains secondary amines which can react with preservatives in cosmetics to form nitrosamines (known carcinogens). PEG-4 Rapeseed Amide is structurally shielded and does not contain the same reactive secondary amines, completely eliminating the nitrosamine risk.
