Polysorbate 20
Pharcos PS 20
Also known as: PEG-20 Sorbitan Monolaurate | Tween 20 Equivalent | Polyoxyethylene (20) Sorbitan Monolaurate
Pharcos PS 20 is an intensely hydrophilic non-ionic surfactant (HLB ~16.7). It is derived by ethoxylating sorbitan monolaurate with 20 moles of ethylene oxide. It is universally relied upon in the cosmetic industry to dissolve completely non-polar oils (like lavender extracts or synthetic perfumes) directly into water, creating flawless, perfectly transparent liquids like body mists and skin toners. Beyond cosmetics, it is an elite wetting agent in agricultural pesticide sprays, ensuring optimal leaf coverage.

How It Works
The solubilization power of Polysorbate 20 is dictated by the extreme size differential between its head and tail.
The relatively short C12 lauric acid tail holds the fragrance oil. The massive, 20-mole ethoxylated sorbitan headgroup creates an enormous, bulbous hydrophilic shell. When these molecules cluster around a fragrance droplet in water, they form tiny, stable spheres (microemulsions) that are physically smaller than the wavelength of visible light. Because light can pass right through them without being scattered, the milky fragrance/water mixture instantly turns crystal clear to the naked eye.
Technical Information
Common questions about Polysorbate 20
PS 20 is often preferred for completely liquid formulations (like body sprays) because it yields a thinner, more watery feel on the skin. HCO-40 is a heavier solubilizer and can leave a slightly tackier skin-feel, though HCO-40 is sometimes superior for extremely heavy, stubborn essential oils.
