Polysorbate 60

Pharcos PS 60

Also known as: PEG-20 Sorbitan Monostearate | Tween 60 Equivalent

Pharcos PS 60 (HLB ~14.9) is formed via the ethoxylation of Sorbitan Monostearate. Because it incorporates the intensely lipophilic, linear C18 stearic acid chain, it is structurally stiffer than PS 20 or PS 40 (often presenting as a soft paste). It is the preferred high-HLB emulsifier for creating thick, rich, 'night-cream' style emulsions. Industrially, it is famous for its commanding ability to lock difficult silicone oils into stable, water-based emulsions for car polishes and dashboard dressings.

Mechanism

How It Works

  • Thickening and stabilization via the stearic tail.

  • In heavy cosmetic creams, the C18 stearic tail of the PS 60 aligns perfectly with the other solid fatty alcohols (like Cetyl or Stearyl Alcohol) formulated in the oil phase. The structural similarity allows the PS 60 to co-crystallize with these waxes as the cream cools. This forms a massive, interconnected 'alpha-gel' crystal lattice throughout the liquid that traps the water tightly, turning what would be a thin lotion into a highly viscous, opulent jar cream.

Common questions about Polysorbate 60

Why is Polysorbate 60 a paste while Polysorbate 20 is a liquid?

The core fatty acid. Polysorbate 20 uses Lauric acid (C12, very short, low melting point). Polysorbate 60 uses Stearic acid (C18, very long, high melting point). The longer stearic chain raises the melting point, making PS 60 a paste.
