PEG-2 Stearyl Ether
Pharcos S 2
Also known as: Polyoxyethylene 2 Stearyl Ether | Macrogol Stearyl Ether 2 | Brij 72 Equivalent
Pharcos S 2 (HLB ~4.9) is produced by reacting Stearyl Alcohol with just 2 moles of ethylene oxide. Because the PEG chain is so short, the massive C18 stearic tail dominates the molecule's behavior, rendering it entirely lipophilic (oil-soluble). While capable of forming thick W/O (water-in-oil) barrier creams, its most famous cosmetic application is as the universal 'matched pair' alongside Steareth-21 to craft perfectly stable, thin-milk emulsions, specifically for roll-on deodorants.

How It Works
The Steareth-2 / Steareth-21 pairing acts as a structural liquid crystal.
When formulated together in a roll-on deodorant, the low-HLB Steareth-2 and the high-HLB Steareth-21 pack tightly together at the oil-water interface. The identical C18 stearyl tails interlock perfectly in the oil phase, creating remarkably rigid 'liquid crystal' networks. This alpha-gel structure locks the water phase in place and firmly suspends heavy, insoluble antiperspirant salts (like Aluminum Chlorohydrate) preventing them from settling to the bottom of the roll-on bottle over months of shelf life.
Technical Information
Common questions about PEG-2 Stearyl Ether
Ceteareth-2 contains a blend of Cetyl (C16) and Stearyl (C18) chains, making it softer. Steareth-2 is pure Stearyl (C18), making it harder and more crystalline. For roll-on deodorants where suspending heavy salts is critical, the pure, rigorous Steareth-2 structure is vastly preferred.
