PEG-23 Lauryl Ether
Pharcos L 23
Also known as: Polyoxyethylene 23 Lauryl Ether | Macrogol Lauryl Ether 23 | Brij 35 Equivalent
Pharcos L 23 (HLB ~16.9) represents the upper extreme of lauryl alcohol ethoxylation. Because of the enormous 23-mole polymer chain, it is a hard, white crystalline solid at room temperature. It is widely prized as a structural gelling agent and matrix builder for clear stick antiperspirants, styling pomades, and solid colognes. Industrially, it is used to structurally stabilize latex paints against freeze-thaw cycles.

How It Works
In solid cosmetic bases (like stick deodorants), the massive PEG chains of Laureth-23 crystallize intensely as the melted formulation cools. Because the lauryl tail is linear (unlike the branched tails of some other waxes), it packs into a highly ordered, geometric matrix. This locks active ingredients entirely within a rigid micro-structure. Crucially, because it is so hydrophilic (HLB 16.9), the moment the solid stick is applied to the armpit or skin, native moisture instantly 'activates' the L-23, causing it to solubilize seamlessly and deposit the active cleanly without leaving a heavy, gummy wax residue.
Technical Information
Common questions about PEG-23 Lauryl Ether
While both act as solubilizers, HCO-40 is a softer semi-solid/paste. Laureth-23 is a considerably harder, crystalline solid that imparts significantly more structural rigidity and structural 'stand-up' to solid stick formulations.
